2018 Forum: Implicit Bias and Approaching the Conversation

July 28, 2018 by Guest User

It was my greatest professional honor to date to welcome the over 320 in-person guests to the inaugural Bâtonnage Forum. You can't hear it on the audio here (the recorder had to edit it out because the microphones went berserk), but I did so by letting out a long, loud scream of triumph, expressing my immense gratitude to the powerful community that showed up to uphold one another and demand forward progress for our industry. After the scream, I had the privilege of setting our intentions—honesty, vulnerability, positivity—for the day and welcoming the incredible Dr. Linda Bisson of UC Davis to lead our opening address. Linda poignantly outlined the concept of implicit bias and how it frames the way that every one of us enters these conversations. I hope you enjoy the listen, and thank you sincerely for being a part of the movement.

Dr. Linda Bisson is a professor emeritus and geneticist in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis; she taught wine production, the biology of yeast, and graduate courses in genetics since 1985 and served as Chair of the department from 1991 to 1996. She co-chairs the Policy and Practices Committee of the ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant to build and sustain a diverse community of innovative (especially women) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholars at UC Davis. She served for several years on the CAP Oversight and Appellate Committees, chairing both. In addition to her academic roles, she was the Science Editor for the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture for 15 years and an editor for other scientific journals as well.
